Dealing with the COVID-19 Pandemic

On Sunday 15 March 2020, President Ramaphosa addressed the nation and declared a National State of Disaster in response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. We have never before been faced with challenges as those created by the spread of this virus. The South African Government has been decisive in its approach to contain the spread of this virus and as a business we are implementing contingency plans and affirm our commitment to taking every precaution to ensure a safe environment for our employees, Members and other business stakeholders.

In line with our values and purpose we have taken the decision that we need to remain available to our Members in our Branches and through our Call Centres.

To date, we have taken the following precautionary measures in an effort to limit the spread of this virus –

  1. The cancellation of the planned Human Rights Day activities in LegalWise Branches on Saturday, 21 March 2020.
  2. The cancellation of all social and planned team building events until further notice.
  3. The suspension of all international and local business travel until further notice. This includes travel by plane, train, bus or by car between cities and/ or provinces.
  4. The suspension of all non-essential training at the Learning and Development Academy.
  5. The cancellation of all non-essential meetings and limiting the number of employees who attend essential internal meetings and workshops.
  6. Restricting access to our buildings at the Head Office, Somerset Office Estate and Skyways Business Park.
  7. Enhancing our cleaning activities throughout our business in partnership with the Cleaning Specialists.
  8. Conducting an assessment of the risk posed by employees who have recently travelled internationally as well at those who have been in contact with individuals who have recently returned from high-risk countries.
  9. Implementing remote working arrangements for a number of employees whilst ensuring uninterrupted service to our Members and other business stakeholders.

While our Branches will remain open for the time being we will continue to monitor the situation and for the most part we will take our lead from the South African Government, local and international specialists.

I would like to encourage you to practise basic hygiene protocols to help fight the spread of this virus.

  • Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water.
  • Maintain at least a 2 metre distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with the bend of your elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze and dispose of the used tissue immediately.

Finally, if you have a scheduled appointment and have a sore throat, runny nose, cough, fever or are having difficulty breathing or have been exposed to somebody who has tested positive we would request that you reschedule your appointment or contact us via our LegalLine for a telephonic consultation.

We thank you for your continued support. I would like to wish you and your families well over the coming weeks. Stay healthy and let’s flatten the curve together.
