In a first, LegalWise South Africa hosted its annual Network Attorney Conference on 19 May 2021 virtually, allowing members of the Network to join the session from across the country. The Conference afforded LegalWise the opportunity to strengthen its working relationship with its Network Lawyers who play an integral role in the service they deliver to their Members.

“By building strong working relationships with our service providers we ensure that the day-to-day business runs smoothly and that our Members experience seamless service,” commented Anele Jacobs, Executive Officer: Claims and Support.

In another first, the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Mr Ronald Lamola, delivered the keynote address to the attendees.

The Minister outlined the importance of access to justice as a constitutional imperative and, within the context of the socio-economic inequalities that exist within our society, the work that needs be done to develop our justice system to make it more accessible. The Minister addressed the steps the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development have taken to navigate the restrictions imposed by the National State of Disaster in response to the COVID pandemic, and he highlighted the lessons that have been learnt through the use of technology which, if adopted in our new normal, can improve access and deliver justice to all South Africans.

The Minister stressed the importance of transformation of the profession, highlighting that inclusion extends beyond representivity but to the quality of work that historically disadvantaged practitioners engage in.

In response to the Minister’s address Siva Gengan, Chief Executive Officer, LegalWise South Africa commented, “you have certainly given us food for thought on how our roles in the profession can shape our society and deliver access to justice. We will respond to your challenge for LegalWise to be at the forefront of the transformation of our profession while empowering our Network Attorneys to deliver access.”
